Coffee for Two
Every morning, Ana goes to the small café on her street. It is warm, and it smells of coffee and bread.
Today it is raining. Ana is wet and tired. She stands in line.
“Good morning, Ana!” says Sam. Sam works at the café. “A big coffee with milk?”
“Yes, please. And a chocolate cookie.”
Sam makes the coffee. Ana opens her bag and looks for her wallet. It is not there. It is at home, on the kitchen table!
“Oh no,” she says. “I'm sorry, Sam. I can't pay today.”
An old man is behind her in the line. He has a newspaper and a kind face. “I can pay for your coffee,” he says.
“Thank you!” says Ana. “But I want to pay you back.”
The man smiles. “Don't worry. It's only a coffee.”
The next morning, the old man is at a table by the window. Ana buys two coffees and two cookies. She sits down with him.
“These are for you,” she says. “I'm Ana.”
“I'm Frank,” he says. Now they have coffee together every morning.
