Cook Until It Smells Right

In the year 2091, the Patel family in Houston bought a kitchen robot. It was tall and silver, with four thin arms and a soft blue light for a face. The children named it Pepper.

Pepper knew five thousand recipes. Its pancakes were perfectly round, and its pasta was better than the pasta at any restaurant in town. For two weeks, everyone was very happy.

Then it was almost time for Grandma Meera's eightieth birthday. Every year on her birthday, the family ate her famous chicken curry, and Grandma always made it. But this year, she had a different idea. "I'm eighty," she said. "I want to sit in the garden and do nothing. Let the robot cook."

So ten-year-old Asha found Grandma's recipe card and showed it to Pepper. The card was old and yellow, and it said: "Onions: a lot. Garlic: enough. Spices: a little of everything. Cook until it smells right."

Pepper's blue light blinked. "Error," it said. "How much is 'a lot'? How much is 'enough'? I don't understand this recipe. And I can't smell."

Asha thought about the problem. Every year, she stood next to Grandma while she made the curry. She didn't know any of the amounts, but she knew that smell better than any other smell in the world.

"Okay, Pepper," she said. "You can't smell, but I can. And I'm not good at measuring, but you are. Let's do it together."

On the afternoon of the party, they got to work. Pepper chopped the onions faster than ten people could. Asha added the spices, a little at a time, and smelled the pot after each one. "More garlic," she said. "No, too much! Okay, now some ginger." Each time, Pepper saved the exact amount in its memory.

Not everything went perfectly. When Asha said, "Now a little pepper," the robot rolled closer to her and said, "Yes?" Asha laughed so hard that she almost dropped the spoon.

Slowly, the kitchen began to smell better and better. Finally, Asha tasted the curry. It wasn't exactly the same as Grandma's, but it was very, very close.

That evening, the whole family was sitting around the big table when Pepper brought in the pot. Grandma Meera tasted the curry. She didn't say anything for a long moment, and everyone was watching her.

"Who made this?" she asked.

"Pepper and I did," said Asha. "Pepper measured, and I smelled."

Grandma smiled. "It's wonderful. Maybe a little too much ginger." Then she winked at Asha. "But when I was your age, I always put in too much ginger too."

After dinner, Pepper's blue light was shining brighter than usual. It saved a new recipe in its memory, with clear numbers: "Grandma Meera's Chicken Curry, by Asha and Pepper." And at the bottom, it added one more line: "Cook until it smells right. Ask Asha."
