First Day at the Flower Shop

Lucy is nervous. Today is her first day at her new job in a small flower shop.

Her boss is Mrs. Green. She is friendly, but very busy. “I'm going to the bank,” she says. “Can you watch the shop for an hour?”

“Yes, I can,” says Lucy. But she is afraid. She doesn't know the prices yet.

Then a young man runs into the shop. He looks worried. “I need roses, please. Red roses! It's my girlfriend's birthday.”

Lucy looks around. There are no red roses today, only yellow, white and pink flowers.

“I'm sorry,” she says. “We don't have red roses.” The man looks very sad.

Then Lucy has an idea. She takes one yellow flower, two white flowers and three pink flowers. She puts them together with a blue ribbon.

“What about this?” she asks.

The man looks at the flowers. “Wow, they're beautiful! She is going to love them.” He pays and leaves with a big smile.

An hour later, Mrs. Green comes back. “Is everything OK?” she asks.

“Yes,” says Lucy. “I'm learning a lot.” And she isn't nervous anymore.
