Max Wants a Job

Max is a dog. He is big and black, but he is very gentle. He lives with Pete in a little white house in Ohio.

Pete works at a bank. Every morning, he goes to work, and Max stays at home.

Max isn't happy. He has a bed and a red ball. But he wants a job.

"A job? You are a dog, Max!" Pete says.

Max looks at Pete. His big eyes say, "Please!"

Pete has an idea. "Okay, Max. Today you can come to work with me."

The bank is big. There are ten desks and a lot of people. The people there work and work. They aren't happy.

Max goes to every desk. He takes his red ball to a young woman. She laughs. He goes to an old man. The man laughs too. Soon, all the people in the bank are happy.

The boss of the bank is Mrs. Green. She is old, and she has white hair. She looks at Max.

"Is this your dog?" she asks Pete.

"Yes, he is. I'm very sorry."

"Sorry? This dog is great! The people here love him!"

Now Max has a job at the bank. He has his own desk with his name on it, and a nice blue bed.

And Pete? Pete has a new job too. He works for Max. Every morning, he gets the red ball for his boss.
