Cold Feet, Warm Heart

Frida had hummed in the corner of the Delgados' kitchen for eleven years without once looking at the oven. It was a matter of principle: she kept things fresh, and ovens made them wilt.

Then the Delgados replaced the old oven with a new one, a stainless-steel model named Otto who ticked softly as he cooled and had the nerve to wish her good night.

"You're crowding me," she told him on his first evening, though he was six feet away.

"Sorry," Otto said. "I'm new. Is it always this quiet in here after dinner?"

It was, and that had always suited Frida just fine. But Otto talked: about the lasagna he'd baked, about the way Mrs. Delgado sang to the bread, about how strange it felt to be warm when everyone else kept their distance. Before long, Frida was saving up little stories for him: the leftover birthday cake, the forgotten jar of pickles in the back.

The trouble started in July. A heat wave rolled over the city, and every time Otto roasted something, Frida's motor strained and groaned. One afternoon, Mr. Delgado frowned at her. "Maybe we should move the fridge out to the garage. The oven's cooking her alive."

Otto went silent. That night, he didn't tick at all.

"Don't you dare feel guilty," Frida said finally. "It's not your fault you're warm."

"It is, though. That's exactly what I am."

She thought about it for a long moment, her compressor humming in the dark. "Then we'll just have to be smarter than they are."

The next morning, Mrs. Delgado found the oven's timer mysteriously set for after sunset, when the kitchen cooled. She shrugged and went along with it. By August, the whole family was eating late dinners on the porch, and nobody mentioned the garage again.

"You know," Otto said one night, "people say opposites attract."

"People," Frida said, "say a lot of things." But her little light flickered on all by itself, and it stayed on a while longer than it needed to.
